Since the inaugural award was given out in the 1955-56 season, the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award has been given out to the best performing player of the regular season every single year. Some incredible names over the years have missed out on the MVP award, such as Dwayne Wade who was beaten to the award by Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Derrick Rose over the years, or Scottie Pippen who lost out to Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon, even without Michael Jordan leading the bulls, Scottie Pippen was able to lead that team to back to back 50 plus win seasons as well as getting a second-round appearance in a year they spent without Jordan. But that isn’t what we’re here to talk about today, we’re here to talk about the BEST players to ever win the MVP award, so let’s get into it!

Best MVP’s from NBA

Michael Jordan is widely regarded as one of, if not the greatest and most influential players to ever play the game. Source: NBA.Com

No article about the greatest NBA MVPs of all time would be complete without our starting point, Michael Jordan. It’s a pretty well-known fact that Jordan is one of the most influential players to play the game, growing up in the UK and not being a huge basketball fan at the time, even I had heard of him. His name was EVERYWHERE. Jordan is a 6 time NBA Champion, 6 time NBA Finals MVP, 5 time NBA MVP as well as MANY other awards. His career is decorated from pillar to pillar. But one season, in particular, stands out for Jordan.

During the 1987-88 season, Michael Jordan put up some absolutely incredible numbers. Statistically, we’re talking 35.0 points per game, 5.9 assists, 5.5 rebounds per game, 3.2 steals per game, and 1.6 blocks per game. Pretty incredible numbers right? The 87-88 season was only Michaels FOURTH season in the NBA, did that matter? Nope! He dominated almost every aspect of the game. His Player Efficiency Rating (PER) is currently THE HIGHEST of all time, since the merger that is at a whopping 31.71. With stats like that, it’s pretty easy to see why he’s in the upper echelon of the basketballing greats and always will be.

LeBron James has one of the most decorated careers of ANY NBA player in history and he’s STILL going. Source: Bleacher Report

It’s no secret that LeBron James has had an incredible career, you’re talking about a 4 time NBA Champion and 4 time NBA Finals MVP. 4 time season MVP, and many more. He’s done it with different teams and effectively different generations. But LeBrons 2012-13 season is the one that stands out the most, this season is pretty high up the rankings in terms of efficiency but he had pretty insane production. 26.8 Points per game, 7.3 Assists per game, and 8 (EIGHT) Rebounds per game. During this season LeBron put together a stretch of 6 games with 30 points or more, which had him netting 60% shooting accuracy. During this time he also helped his team (Then the Miami Heat) to a crazy 27 game winning streak which is the second-longest in the history of the NBA.

His season stats saw him shooting 57% with 41% from behind the three-point line, ending the season on a 31.6 player efficiency rating, which turned out to be his 6th straight season at the top of the PER table. Oh and by the way, if me listing his stats above wasn’t enough to blow your mind, he’s one of only FOUR players in the history of the league to average those stats in a single season. If it wasn’t for a single vote, LeBron would’ve been the first player to be selected unanimously as MVP in the history of the league, insane right?

There are of course some honorable mentions, while Michael Jordan has arguably gone down as the greatest player to play ball and LeBron James has been hot on his tail statistically, trying to topple every record he can, these 2 guys are just the kings of MY life time before I even started watching basketball you had players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain. There are of course some honorable mentions from my lifetime too, look at Shaq 99-00 and Iverson 00-01, incredible seasons. The NBA is truly the gift that keeps on giving.

So, based on what we’re seeing so far and using some NBA basketball live odds EVEN IF IT IS PRE SEASON, who are you backing to take the MVP award this season? Have you got a bet on? If so, share the tips! I personally think it’s too early to make a decision, I tend to wait until the season is at least a few weeks in before I make a call. But one thing is for sure, I’m so keen for the NBA to return to our screens, LETS GO RAPTORS!
